HOW TO BEGIN
While many people are interested in a career in the Precision Machined Products Industry, only a few have the skills and abilities required to operate the complex technologies used today to produce components with extremely complex geometries and tight tolerances. In the truest sense, it is a profession that requires ongoing study and training.If you are in school, stay there to get a good grounding in the fundamentals. Take as many courses in math and science as you can. You'll also need good communication skills, and the ability to read part drawings will be a real plus. There are many sources for this training, including public schools, vocational or technical schools and community colleges.
Once you have become a part of the Industry, take advantage of the training offered by your employer. Through on-the-job training and apprenticeships you will learn the techniques of the trade which you will be able to apply throughout your career.
Your knowledge and skills will be rewarded with a high wage, plus benefits. Considering the opportunities for overtime, a qualified screw machine technician can annually earn $40,000 or more.

The Precision Machined Products Industry is the first fully-automated metalworking industry with a history spanning more than 100 years. Today, more than 48,000 highly-skilled professionals are employed at 1,500 companies across North America producing high precision, custom components by the millions.Using the very latest technology, including automatic screw machines, rotary transfer machines, computer controlled (CNC) single and multiple spindle lathes, and CNC turning and machining centers, the Industry manufactures products that touch our lives each and every day.
For example, anti-lock brakes, transmissions, fuel injection systems, and air bags on cars and trucks; personal computer hard drives and video recording equipment; connectors of all types; medical diagnostic equipment; appliances, faucets, lawn mowers and power tools - all these items and more contain components made by this industry.
